High-Strength Bonding Adhesive for EPDM Rubber Roofing

ClassicBond EPDM Contact Adhesive is a high strength, solvent-based bonding adhesive used wherever maximum grip and long term hold are required when installing the ClassicBond EPDM rubber roofing system.

It is specifically designed for perimeters, upstands, angle changes, vertical surfaces and detail areas, where standard water-based adhesive is not suitable. Once bonded, the membrane is held securely in place to resist movement, uplift and temperature changes.

What This Adhesive Is Used For

ClassicBond Contact Adhesive is used when installing EPDM rubber roofing on:

  • Roof perimeters
  • Upstands and vertical surfaces
  • Angle changes
  • Steep slopes
  • Detail areas where strong initial grab is required
  • As the deck adhesive on roofs over 100m²

On timber decks, it is typically used:

  • Around the outer edges of the roof
  • In a 150mm perimeter strip when water-based adhesive is used in the centre

On certain non-porous decks or commercial installations over 100m², it may be used to bond the entire roof area.

Why Contact Adhesive Matters

The contact adhesive is what locks the EPDM membrane in place at the most vulnerable parts of the roof.

Used correctly, it:

  • Prevents membrane lifting at edges
  • Resists movement caused by temperature changes
  • Provides immediate grab once bonded
  • Helps ensure the roof stays secure long-term

This is a critical component in a correctly installed ClassicBond EPDM rubber roofing system.

Suitable Surfaces

ClassicBond EPDM Contact Adhesive is suitable for bonding EPDM membrane to:

  • Timber (OSB3 / plywood)
  • Brick and blockwork
  • Render
  • Concrete
  • Metal
  • Plastics
  • Approved insulation boards

Not suitable for use with expanded polystyrene (EPS).

How the Adhesive Is Applied (Simple Overview)
  • Apply using a short-pile roller or spreader brush
  • Apply a thin, even coat to both surfaces being bonded
  • Allow the adhesive to become touch dry before bonding (it should be tacky without leaving residue on your fingers)
  • Carefully position the membrane — it cannot be repositioned once bonded
  • Roll firmly to ensure full contact and remove trapped air
  • Bonding times vary depending on surface type and conditions, typically between 2–20 minutes
Important Installation Notes
  • Stir thoroughly before use
  • Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and dust-free
  • Do not apply to wet or frosted surfaces
  • Apply pressure with a roller after bonding
  • Trimming can be carried out immediately after bonding
  • Once stuck, the membrane cannot be lifted and repositioned
Coverage Rates

Approximate coverage when applied to both surfaces:

  • 1.0L – covers approx. 1–2 m²
  • 2.5L – covers approx. 4–5 m²
  • 5.0L – covers approx. 7–10 m²

Coverage may vary depending on surface texture and porosity.

A Roofer’s Perspective

Water-based adhesive does the bulk of the work but contact adhesive does the critical work.

Using contact adhesive correctly at perimeters and details is what stops edge lift, movement and long-term problems. It’s one of those products you only notice when it’s not used properly.
