Pressure-Sensitive Seam Tape for EPDM Rubber Roofing Sold Per Linear Metre
ClassicBond 3″ EPDM Splice Tape is a pressure-sensitive seam tape used to permanently join EPDM rubber roofing membranes together.
It is the correct method for forming on-site seams, L-shaped roof joints, and membrane extensions where the roof cannot be installed in one continuous sheet.
Manufactured using a uniform adhesive layer and clear poly backing, this seam tape provides excellent long-term splice strength and delivers greater peel and shear performance than standard seam tapes.
When to Use 3″ EPDM Splice Tape ▸
3″ splice tape is used when:
- Two EPDM sheets need to be joined in the field
- Installing on L-shaped roofs
- Extending EPDM membranes retrospectively
- Forming controlled seam joints
- Joining EPDM to a lead skirt termination, such as where a flat roof meets a sloping tiled or mansard roof
It creates a clean, low-profile seam that is less visible than 6″ cover tape, while still providing strong long-term performance.
Why Use 3″ Splice Tape Instead of 6″ Cover Tape? ▸
3″ splice tape is designed specifically for joining membrane to membrane. It:
- Requires a 75mm (3″) overlap between sheets
- Provides uniform adhesive thickness
- Delivers strong peel and shear performance
- Creates a neater, less visible seam
6″ cover tape can be used, but it is typically used for repairs or flashing details - not primary field seams.
How the Splice Is Formed (Best Practice) ▸
- Ensure the two EPDM sheets overlap by minimum 75mm (3″)
- Clean the splice area thoroughly
- Apply ClassicBond EPDM Primer using a scrubbing pad
- Allow primer to flash off until it does not transfer to a dry finger
- Align and apply seam tape to the bottom sheet
- Ensure at least 3mm of tape extends beyond the splice edge
- Roll the tape firmly using a 50mm hand roller
- Remove the release liner and allow the top sheet to settle onto the tape
- Roll the completed seam across the splice edge (not parallel)
Proper rolling pressure is essential to reduce air blistering and ensure full adhesion.
Technical Details ▸
- Width: 76mm (3″)
- Max Roll Length: 30.5m
- Base: Synthetic rubber
- Thickness: 0.71mm
- Tack-Free Time: Less than 1 hour at 21°C
Suitable for: ClassicBond membranes
Important Notes ▸
- Primer must be used - the tape will not bond to dusty or unprimed membranes
- Do not apply to wet or contaminated surfaces
- Store in a dry area
- For colder conditions, heat may be required to achieve proper adhesion
- It is best practice to install seams with the fall of the roof so that water flows over the joint, not into it
A Roofer’s Perspective ▸
3″ splice tape is the correct way to join EPDM sheets on site. It creates a strong, clean seam without the bulk of wider tapes.
Used with primer and properly rolled, it becomes part of the membrane system and delivers long-term seam performance.
